Our emphasis on high-needs schools will prepare you to leave either program ready to challenge norms and build inclusive communities in any educational setting. Through the program, you will:
- Choose from two distinct paths: teaching K-6 (MA in Teaching – Multiple Subject (Elementary)) or teaching middle school and above (MA in Teaching – Single Subject (Middle or High School))
- Earn a teaching degree from a school with a strong reputation among employers.
- Take classes online from any location.
- Be mentored by a guiding teacher.
- Have the option to complete the requirements for an Education Specialist credential or other authorizations and certificates.

Teach Middle or High School
If you’re interested in teaching in middle or high school classrooms, you will pursue the Master of Arts in Teaching – Single Subject (Middle or High School) online degree. Upon completion of the online program, you will be recommended for California’s Single Subject Teaching Credential, a requirement for most teaching roles in the state. While in the program, you’ll choose from one of four subjects that align with your interest:
- English
- Math
- Science
- Social Science
Teach Elementary School
Want to lead K-6 classrooms? This is the program for you. With a Master of Arts in Teaching – Multiple Subject (Elementary) online degree, you’ll develop the skills and confidence to teach in elementary school classrooms throughout California. Upon completion of the online program, you will be recommended for California’s Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, a requirement for many teaching positions in the state.
Explore MAT-MS OnlineImmersive Experiences
Both MAT online programs integrate student teaching with your coursework, allowing you to immediately apply the strategies learned in your courses. Beginning in the second semester of the program, you will complete student teaching four full days a week (minimum of 28 hours per week) at a placement site near where you live. Those pursuing a MAT – Multiple Subject (Elementary) degree will be placed in an elementary school, and students in the MAT – Single Subject (Middle or High School) track will be placed in a local middle or high school.
